Canon: Into the Badlands
Canon Point: 1x06: Hand of Five Poisons. I'm pulling him mid-fight with the Abbots, so he will probably think their dark chi blew him into another universe or something.
World Description:
(I know this is for OCs only, but because the ITB world is pretty unique, I'm going to detail it briefly so Sunny's history has some context.)
Into the Badlands takes place in, well, the badlands, which is post-apocalyptic America divided up into 7 territories, each run by a baron. They each control a very specific resource, like gold, oil, opium, etc. There's a tenuous peace between them that at the start of the series is beginning to shatter. Because guns have been outlawed, the "Clippers", or soldiers, are instead highly trained in combat, often starting from childhood. In short, it is an extremely volatile and violent world. Each baron has a regent who serves as a trusted adviser, army commander, and personal assassin. This is who Sunny is when we are introduced to him.
History: Sunny was orphaned as a child and was found by the then-regent of the baron Quinn, named Waldo. Waldo took to calling him "Sunshine", which is how he got his name. It's suggested that Sunny knows or remembers very little about his childhood before this time, including his real name, only that he was the rare survivor of some sort of slaughter. All he has is a compass and a pendant depicting a mysterious place called Azra that might be his home. According to the accompanying AMC comics, Sunny was a bit of a hothead and defiant as a boy. Waldo ends up taking him as his "Colt" and personally trains him, although Quinn takes quite a bit of credit, too, for shaping Sunny into the man he is now. It must be true to some degree because when we meet Sunny, he has an unwavering loyalty to Quinn. At the very least, Quinn has provided him with quite a bit: a home, respect, the highest rank in his Clipper force, and the freedom to move in and out of the Fort as he wishes. In return, Sunny has protected and killed for Quinn at his command -- 404 total at the start of the series, each tattooed as a mark on his back, making him the most highly decorated Clipper in the badlands.
Sunny starts to get into trouble for two reasons. The first is a kid he finds named M.K., who he takes back into the Fort to join Quinn's ranks of workers and Clippers. M.K. makes a stupid decision that gets him arrested and Sunny ends up secretly freeing him. Although Quinn has little interest in M.K. at the time, it's still the first time Sunny has ever done anything remotely disloyal. He also keeps M.K.'s dark "chi" power a secret. The second is a woman named Veil. Veil is a medical doctor and unlike nearly everyone in the badlands, she was born free. This means she belongs to no baron and bears no brand. When Veil reveals she is pregnant, Sunny is faced with the decision of either getting out of the badlands or risking her life, since Clippers are not allowed to have families under penalty of death. Veil seems to be the first time Sunny has fallen in love and he agrees to leave the badlands after Quinn kills her parents.
Of course, leaving is not easy and it's unclear if there's even anything out there. When M.K., who wears the same pendant Sunny has, promises he can help find the way to Azra, they begin to collaborate. At the same time, another baron known as the Widow has begun setting in motion a plan to pitch nearly all the other barons together in war. Sunny does his best to protect Quinn, but between M.K., Veil, and the Widow's meddling -- not to mention Quinn's resentful son -- it starts to seem to Quinn that Sunny's loyalties are beginning to slip. This all culminates in him getting thrown into the basement prison in the last episode, although Waldo frees him, telling him to forget about M.K., and to take Veil and go. Sunny, disregarding this very good advice, decides to go find this dumb kid who's grown on him. He also happens to find Quinn along the way, who he promptly stabs, claiming Quinn as his "last tattoo."
In an effort to save M.K., Sunny winds up in a fight with three Abbots who possess the supernatural power of the dark chi. This is where I'm pulling him from.
Personality: Sunny was basically raised as a child soldier, in a world where child soldiers are the norm, and where barons can have anyone killed on a whim. Coupled with rules against families and falling in love, Sunny is a very closed off person on the surface. He's been trained to keep his emotions in check during combat, but the problem seems to be that the whole world is a battlefield to him. It's difficult to read what he's thinking and very few people can get under his skin.
He's also fairly straightforward. His language is very precise and clear, and he doesn't play games. His only saving grace when it comes to lying seems to be his exceptional poker face. He has a limited ability to spin stories or plant seeds of doubt, unlike the barons and other royalty that make up the family. His tactic for lying seems to be to say "no" when he means yes, and then stare at people until they accept it. It's what ultimately gets him in trouble in the end -- it's clear early on that Sunny's actions are causing Quinn to doubt him. But Sunny never takes any steps to help rectify his image, never notes that Quinn's son, Ryder, is a huge danger to him due to how much he resents Sunny's place at Quinn's side. He turns down every opportunity presented to him to make alliances and take over as baron himself. All he does is keep his head down and doggedly pursue the Widow while struggling to find a way out of the badlands, as if the only way he knows how to fix anything is to keep fighting and protect the few people he cares about.
Although he is undoubtedly a cold-blooded killer -- it's how he was raised -- Sunny is not without morals, and his loyalty to Quinn does have limits when pushed. It starts to waver when he finds sympathy for M.K., who he seems to see himself in. When he releases M.K., he tells him he's "offering him a choice", one which he never had. When Quinn orders him to kill Veil's parents, he refuses to do it. He argues that they only kill their "enemies", suggesting that he tries, at least, to draw a distinction between civilians and combatants. When Quinn ultimately does the deed himself, their deaths greatly trouble Sunny. In short, Sunny does not take pleasure in killing. He does it because he has to, because he's trying to protect whomever, because it's the only thing he knows how to do, but it's obvious a part of him longs for something better and that the toll of that body count weighs on him. When we first meet him, he doesn't think anything else is out there and that even if there is, a killer like him doesn't deserve it. With Veil's coaxing and M.K.'s arrival, the dream starts to take a more formative shape and he can't shake it any longer. There's a clear shift in his loyalties when he tells M.K. that he's not after the Widow to protect Quinn anymore -- he's doing it to protect M.K.
His stoicism does not mean he is an emotionally stunted individual, however. He doesn't struggle with his feelings for Veil; he knows he loves her, even though it's dangerous, and while he doesn't seem to fully grasp why Veil sees a good man in him, he wants to be a good person to her. He wants to love her and he never pretends otherwise except where it might get him killed. Sunny's struggle is more between what he wants and what he believes he is allowed to have. Veil is important to him because she's the only person who believes he can be more than a killer. Sunny wants to believe that, too, and when she expresses doubt whether he ever really can after learning he didn't stop Quinn from killing her parents, it obviously hurts him. Whether for Veil or for himself or a little of both, Sunny is starting to make strides towards redemption. It can be safe to say that he will probably not be pledging his allegiance to another baron anytime soon.
Inventory: Sunny comes with:
- 2 swords, a katana and a wakizashi, which apparently can attach together to make a double-bladed weapon thing (don't ask)
- his clothes, including his signature red coat
- a flask
- a pendant and its matching compass
- a telescope/spyglass
Abilities: Sunny does not have powers per se, but he does exist in wuxia land, so fighting prowess is a bit exaggerated for everyone. This means that in addition to his proficiency with bladed weapons and various martial arts, he's capable, for instance, of jumping higher than average. It's not to any crazy degree (he's not leaping up any roofs), but it's present. Even within the context of this world, he's considered the most skilled fighter. Only supernatural powers were able to take him down, and it took 3 of them to do it. I want to emphasize skilled because in terms of brute force, he seems average; he doesn't have super strength or anything. But his ability to manipulate the flow of combat in his favor, along with his speed, makes him nearly unmatched. Only the Widow seems to come close to being his equal.
He's very good at analyzing a battlefield and his senses appear especially keen. As regent, he's presumably a great strategist and commander. Quinn certainly seems to trust Sunny's assessments and makes his decisions based on them -- even over those of his own son.
That said, Sunny's skills pretty much don't extend beyond what he needs to survive. His reading level is that of a 6 year old at best (he struggles with long words like illuminated; we learn from Veil she has been teaching him for only 3 months) and it's unclear how capable he is of writing. Most of the in-game network will probably confound him. Technology-wise, he seems to know enough to upkeep his motorcycle, but any other tech beyond old cars and phonographs don't exist.
Flaws: Sunny has personally killed hundreds of people and dozens more throughout the series (he stops keeping track). This is probably the worst thing he's done. He's also actively participated in human trafficking (barons take "cogs" to work on their territories, which are basically slaves), torture, and he can be loyal to a fault.

[When the air ripples with an energy Sunny does not yet understand, he expects things to escalate quickly. What he does not expect, however, is for the entire world to go dark. He definitely does not expect to be somewhere else altogether: no car, no abbots.
No M.K.
He rolls to his feet. Did they take M.K.? Where is this? That damn kid -- he doesn't even know why he bothers. (He knows.) The ground beneath his boot is unfamiliar and the circular arena is nothing he’s seen before. Wherever this is, it’s far away from Quinn’s fields. The air smells stale and full of earth, the way it might under the mines, deep beneath the grounds. Except this is no mine. It’s enormous. When he looks up, the ceiling seems to stretch right into the sky, and when he breathes in again, the sharp metallic of blood tinges the back of his throat. Now that, he is familiar with.
His hand rests lightly on the sword at his hip, though he can’t spot anyone wounded or dying or trying to kill someone else. He’s not sure what to make of that; on the one hand, he really does prefer his threats face-on, but he’s also tired, the kind you can’t sleep off. He hopes whatever bled here, it’s gone now.
In the end, the place is so big he just picks a direction to walk in. It’s circular. That means there must be an exit he’ll run into eventually if he just goes in the same direction. As he walks, his fingers trace deep gouges along the walls, marks that were made by no man. There are layers of rusted red and deep pits covered with caged tops. He realizes he actually has seen arenas like this before—not in person, but in some of Veil’s books that he would flip through, tracing the old sketches and drawings while she explained the captions beneath to him.
His pace picks up. It doesn’t matter where he is. He needs to get back to her and with any luck, he’ll be dragging M.K. with him.]
